چکیده

The establishment of specific and thoroughly researched criteria to evaluate hospitals’ activity is very important because there is a huge and increasing amount of public resources dedicated to healthcare. Therefore, it is necessary to design a system to evaluate healthcare performance in order to discover and improve potential inefficiencies. With this goal in mind, the purpose of this paper is to analyse efficiency in three healthcare service units in Valencian hospitals to establish appropriate guidelines for efficiency performance. Three healthcare service units of 22 hospitals in the Valencian Community (East Spain) with a waiting list higher than average were selected (general surgery, ophthalmology, traumatology–orthopaedic surgery). In this study, a non-parametric methodology, known as theDEAmodel (Data Envelopment Analysis), was used alongwith two efficiency indexes whichwere specially designed. Discriminant analyses proved the effectiveness of these two indexes, therefore the indicators are an easier and effective methodology for measuring efficiency than theDEAModel. In addition, the discriminant analysis offers a functionwhich classifies new health services as efficient or inefficient. In conclusion, this paper offers tools for evaluating the performance of hospital activity which are useful for both hospital management and health administration controlling hospital performance. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Multi-period network Data Envelopment Analysis to measure the efficiency of a real business

Measuring the efficiency of real businesses is not a simple task, because a real business may involve several processes and sub-processes, forming a very complicated dynamic network of interactions. In this paper, a customized dynamic network data envelopment analysis (NDEA) model is proposed to measure the efficiency of the sub-processes in a real business. The proposed dynamic NDEA model is f...

Malmquist Productivity Index Using Two-stage DEA Model in Heart Hospitals

Abstract Heart patients displays several symptoms and it is hard to point them. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) provides a comparative efficiency degree for each decision-making units (DMUs) with several inputs and outputs. Evaluating of hospitals is one of the major applications in DEA. In this study, a comparison of additive model with standard input oriented and output oriented M...

A ‎D‎ivergence Measure for Combining Super-Efficiency Scores in Performance Measurement of Two-Stage Production Systems

In the conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) internal sub-processes of the production units are ignored. The current paper develops a network-DEA super-efficiency model to compare the performance of efficient network systems. A new ranking method is developed by aggregating the computed super-efficiency scores with a J-divergence measure. The proposed approach is then applied to evaluate...
